“Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.”

Purpose

The Black Birthright travel experience takes Black American students to African countries to learn their hidden history, experience the continent’s rich culture and develop a stronger sense of self and purpose.

Trip goals include:

  • Fostering an appreciation for international travel

  • Learning Black history as it pre-dates slavery

  • Learning about Africa’s evolution and how it became the continent it is today

  • Experiencing the many faces of Africa: History, Culture, Music, Food, Art, Education, Entrepreneurship, Nature and Development

We believe experience is the greatest teacher and through an intentional, immersive and highly engaging program, students will learn, grow and continue the path towards reaching their greatest potential.

The Black Birthright travel experience has three key components: Context, Experience and Reflection.

CONTEXT is a pre-travel program designed to ensure students have the background information required to maximize their in-country experience.

EXPERIENCE is the trip. From the moment we take off to the moment we return, we utilize every opportunity to explore, learn and thoughtfully engage with the world around us.

REFLECTION occurs throughout the trip and continues afterward. What did we see? How did it make us feel? Did it change our perceptions? If so, how? What will we do with this insight? Why does it matter?
